A social security number is an identifier issued to each citizen of the United States by the federal government and used for the administration of the Social Security program and for official forms and records.

Social security numbers are used by York University for the U.S. Direct Loan Program. U.S. citizens and permanent residents studying in an undergraduate or graduate program at York University can apply for direct loans through the U.S. Department of Education.
