Job Code

Job Code

Synonym(s): N/A

A job code is a unique identifier of a job. Each job at York University is assigned a job code. Job codes provide information about the job and are defined based on inherent roles, responsibilities, tasks and other attributes to allow for data and payroll processing. Multiple employees can have a role with the same job code. The attributes associated with a job code, and maintained by Human Resources (HR), include the following:

  • Job Title
  • Standard Hours
  • Manager Level
  • Compensation Frequency
  • Job Type - Regular/Temporary
  • Union Membership
  • National Occupational Class (NOC) code
  • Employment/Labour Standards Status
  • WCB Classification
  • Salary Plan/Grade/Step
  • Job Description

A job code identifies roles with people management responsibilities and those without.

Following HR best practices, non-academic job codes are created using a six-digit numeric code assigned sequentially based on the next available number. Job codes assigned under the legacy standardized code system still exist primarily in faculty-related jobs.
