What is it?
A status document that proves someone is a Permanent Resident (PR) of Canada. It is needed by PR’s to re-enter Canada after
being abroad. It is also a government photo ID.
Who Can Get One?
A person must have permanent resident status in Canada to apply for a permanent resident card.
How to Get One
Proof of Residency
PR’s must remain in Canada for 730 days over five (5) years to meet their residency obligations.
A person must submit two (2) forms of proof that they have met their residency obligation over the past five (5) years. All five (5) years of documentation must be provided. This can include:
- Lease agreements
- Employment records or pay stubs
- CRA assessments
- Proof of receiving social assistance
- Bank statements
Photos
PR Card applications must include two (2) professional photos similar to passport photos.
Proof of Identity
A PR card applicant must submit one (1) of the following documents to prove their identity:
- A valid passport or travel document
- The passport they held when they became a PR
- A certificate of identity or travel document issued by IRCC or a foreign country
