To kick off the IP Intensive program for 2015, we would like to express our thanks and appreciation to SOCAN for their generosity in providing a subsidy for the IP Intensive out of town placements. The subsidy will assist those students placed in Ottawa and California with some of their expenses. Osgoode Hall Law School will also match any external subsidies received for the IP Intensive out of town placements.
We are pleased to announce details of the 2015 Intellectual Property Law and Technology Intensive Program.
The IP Intensive is a unique program that gives students practical, experiential education in a workplace setting for an entire term in lieu of being in the classroom. Our students gain valuable practical experience which will assist them in obtaining employment after law school, and some of our students' research in the program have been published in peer-reviewed journals such as the Intellectual Property Journal (IPJ).
The Acting Program Co-directors for 2015 are Adjunct Professors Bob Tarantino and Dan Ciraco. Respected and held in high regard by the IP community, both bring a wealth of practical expertise and knowledge to the IP Intensive program that guarantees an enriching and valuable experience for our students.
We have a wonderful array of placement partners for the Fall 2015 term, the IP intensive placement organizations include: Astrazeneca Canada Inc., Canadian Heritage, Canadian Intellectual Property Office, CBC, Cineplex Entertainment, Industry Canada (Copyright and International IP Policy Branch), the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada (SOCAN), Stanford Centre for Legal Informatics (CodeX), The Globe and Mail, TEVA Canada Limited, TVO, and ventureLAB.
The IP Intensive begins with 2 weeks of class seminars, featuring presentations and workshops by experts prominent in the IP community. The seminars will cover a wide range of topics, from “Trade-mark Prosecution” to “Intellectual Property Reform Process”, from “Biotechnology Focus: Pharma” to “IP Issues in the High Tech Industry”. Our IP Intensive students will be interacting and engaging in stimulating discussions with a federal court judge, the Chair of the Trade-marks Opposition Board, senior policy analysts from Canadian Heritage (Copyright Policy Branch) and Industry Canada, in-house counsels and top executives from a broad range of industries, and practitioners from major Canadian law firms. The students will then be at their placements full-time from September 14 to November 20 with one of our placement partners.
Throughout the term, the students will be meeting with Adjunct Professors Bob Tarantino and Dan Ciraco periodically to discuss topics relating to intellectual property law, to share their experiences in the work environment, and to participate in the cross-pollination of ideas. The students will also be maintaining a reflective journal and blog on the IPilogue. They will also be leading their own seminar presentations and submitting a major research paper, which will occupy the wrap-up week of the program.
If you are interested in attending any of the seminars or participating as a placement, please do not hesitate to email us (iposgoode@osgoode.yorku.ca).
