Description of Project: Jane Finch Community Legal Services is a community legal aid clinic serving the Jane Finch community. Various services are offered by the Clinic to the community.
Role of Student Volunteers: Students will be trained to receive clients and interview clients on the details of their legal matters to assist in the progress of the file. Where applicable and under the supervision of the supervising lawyer, students will follow up on client files that they were the initial contact on. This includes engaging and interviewing returning clients when deemed appropriate. Please note, students cannot provide legal advice.
Students will be asked to research legal issues and will also be asked to assist the legal workers in the management and closing of files. The research and other client work will include (but are not limited to):
• Tenant Rights
• Ontario Works (OW)
• Ontario Disability Support Program (ODSP)
• Immigration
• Citizenship
• Employment Insurance (EI)
• Statutory Declarations and Affidavits
Student research topics will be decided at the beginning of the school year based on student interest and the Clinic’s need at the time. The final research deliverable will likely be in the output of a public legal education tool. Depending on the topic/nature of the research it can be mutually decided between the student and the organization which output would be most appropriate.
Role of Supervising Lawyer(s): To review the work done by the students before it is used by the organization and to provide guidance on the completed work. of the students.
