Project Name: Refugee Application Support

Project Type: Client services (court forms, shadowing, mock hearings, intake, legal clinic, etc.)

Project Delivery: Remote

Description of Project: Students will assist with legal aid and pro bono client meetings (under the supervision of a lawyer) and various client file work for those going through the refugee application process. The workload will be tailored to the students’ availability and the 3-5 hours per week Osgoode program guidelines.

The students will not do more than 10% administrative tasks.

Role of Student Volunteers: Aid the lawyer with client files, including assisting clients with drafting refugee claimant narratives, conducting country research for immigration and refugee applications, and attending client meetings with counsel. Additionally, there will be an opportunity to observe counsel during refugee claimant hearings before the Refugee Protection Division (RPD).

Role of Supervising Lawyer(s): Mentor the students in learning about immigration and refugee law by providing training and ongoing support as they engage in client file work.

Main Project Deliverable: Completing client intake and assistance (e.g. completing client intake, providing client referrals, helping clients with their ID documents, etc.)
