York’s Research Landscape in Artificial Intelligence

York University currently offers more than 80+ AI-related courses across six different Faculties, as well as AI master’s programs and AI certificate programs. Over 100+ York faculty members are currently engaged in AI-related research.

Artificial Intelligence and Society Task Force & Report
VP Academic & Provost along with the VP Research & Innovation brought together a collegial academic taskforce to develop ideas and examine options for building and featuring York’s research strengths in the area of Artificial Intelligence.

York University Research Centres and Units

  • Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Society
    The Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Society (CAIS) unites researchers who are collectively advancing state-of-the-art theory and practice of artificial intelligence (AI) systems, law, governance and public policy.  The research focuses on AI systems that address societal priorities in health care, smart cities and sustainability, and are fair, explainable, reliable and trusted.

  • Centre for Innovation in Computing @ Lassonde
    The mandate of the Centre for Innovation in Computing @ Lassonde [School of Engineering] is to establish itself as a nationally leading and internationally recognized research unit focusing on the science of computing and its realization to enable novel solutions and technologies.

  • Institute for Research on Digital Literacies
    The Institute for Research on Digital Literacies (IRDL) explores the diverse and evolving uses and implications of media and technology in formal and informal learning environments, and in digital culture more generally.

  • Institute for Technoscience and Society
    The Institute for Technoscience and Society (ITS) is a global hub of critical and interdisciplinary research and knowledge mobilization on the relationship between technoscience and society, especially the configuration of social power underpinning scientific claims, medical practices, emerging technologies, and sites of innovation.

  • Sensorium: Centre for Digital Arts and Technology
    Sensorium is a research centre for creative inquiry and experimentation at the intersection of the media arts, performance, and digital culture.

  • Connected Minds: Neural and Machine Systems for a Healthy, Just Society initiative
    Connected Minds is a $318.4 million, seven-year interdisciplinary research initiative led by York University and funded by the federal government through the Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) program. It is a first-of-its kind research project that aims to advance the understanding of relationships between human minds and machines, and how society can evolve with these emerging technologies in a socially responsible way. 

  • York University AI Entrepreneurship
    York University has a thriving AI start-up culture supported by the commercialization experts at Innovation YorkIP Osgoode, the Innovation Clinic and the Bergeron Entrepreneurs in Science and Technology (BEST) labs. Application areas include attentive vision systems for sports and security, mobility assessment technologies, construction and real-estate.
