GLRC Snapshot Series

2024

This research snapshot presents findings based on data collected across 30 firms employing nearly 3,500 workers that have implemented shortened and compressed work schedules. Consistent with international data, it finds that shortened and compressed work schedules often boost productivity and economic output, improve health outcomes, strengthen equity initiatives and reduce carbon emissions. However, while a great many workers benefitted, for some the transition to shortened and compressed work weeks led to a slight increase in initial work, along with challenges related to childcare arrangements outside of traditional business hours. Despite these challenges, this research adds to the growing body of literature that finds shortened and compressed work schedules may create new opportunities to strengthen worker bargaining power and create a more equitable and enriching future of work.

Submission guidelines

GLRC Snapshot is a series of plain-language reports and summaries meant to connect labour, community and academic research in the public interest. It considers “what the research found” and “how it can be used” to identify and communicate real-world impacts from academic research. Snapshots are meant to support researchers engaging with labour and community-based practitioners and other non-technical, non-academic audiences. GLRC Snapshots should be between 2,000-2,500 words (including references).

Prospective authors are encouraged to look at this document to find out about the GLRC's mandate and core themes.
