Translation and Children’s Literature, Films and Animation in North and South Korea

Event Description

This event will explore the literary, cultural and social implications of the exportation and importation of children’s literature, film, and animation in North and South Korea. The event is divided into the morning session and the afternoon session and will cover topics including: social and political implications of dubbing vs. subtitles, uses of translated children’s literature in Textbooks, transforming fairy tales in North and South Korea, Soviet models vs. colonial traditions of children’s literature in North and South Korea.

The morning sessions (Panel 1 and 2) are moderated by Professor Thomas Klassen (York University) and Dr. Daniel Pieper (Monash University), and include:

  • “Images of Children in North Korean Literature in the Kim Jong-un Era” by Professor Seong-su Kim (Department of the University College, Sungkyunkwan University)
  • “The Aspects of Children’s Literature Education through Translation Works in North Korean Language Textbooks” by Professor Ok-Kyu Lim (Faculty of Liberal Arts, Cheongju University)
  • Koreiskie Skazki; The Revival of Garin-Mikhailovskii’s Korean Fairy Tales (1904) in the Service of DPRK-Soviet Friendship during the Korean War, (1950-1953)” by Professor Ross King (Department of Asian Studies, University of British Columbia)
  • “Coming of Age Elements in Translations of Hong Sŏkchung’s Hwang Chini” by Professor Bruce Fulton (Department of Asian Studies, University of British Columbia)

The afternoon session (Panel 3 and 4) are moderated by Professor Theresa Hyun (York University) and Professor Thomas Klassen (York University), and include:

  • “Translating Race in In Search of Father (1952-1954): Adventure Stories between Imperialism and Colonial Critique” by Dr. Na Sil Heo (Postdoctoral Associate in East Asian Studies and Lecturer in History, Council on East Asian Studies at Yale University)
  • “Vernacular Visions in North and South Korea: Inter-lingual Translations of Unyŏng Chŏn (The Tale of Unyong) and Ideologies of National Literature” by Dr. Daniel Pieper (Lecturer, Department of Literatures, Languages, Cultures and Linguistics, Monash University)
  • “Generals, Tigers and Princesses: Translating Folk and Fairy Tales and Animation in North Korea and Transnationally” by Professor Theresa Hyun (Department of Humanities, York University)
  • “Engaging K-Culture through K-Children’s Animation: How Dubbing Conveys Korean Culture and Education to Worldwide Children’s Audiences through South Korean Children’s Animation” by Esther Eojin Hwang (Coordinator, WildBrain)

This virtual event is organized and moderated by Theresa Hyun (York University, Department of Humanities), Thomas Klassen (York University, Department of Public Policy), and Daniel Pieper (Monash University, Lecturer). This event is also organized by the Korean Office for Research and Education (KORE) at York University, which is funded by the Academy of Korean Studies.
