Career Mentor Program

Frequently Asked Questions:

What is the Career Mentor Program?

Our Career Mentoring Program connects students with experienced business professionals (alumni or external industry mentors) to provide individualized career guidance that supports their career development. Please refer to the Mentoring Handbook(PDF) for more details.

The mentoring program also includes alumni-related career skills sessions each semester. Students can have their questions answered and obtain advice from multiple potential mentors during the panel discussion and speed mentoring sessions, and learn job hunting tips and experience from alumni.

Why mentoring?

It is not always obvious to new graduate students how to research career directions. Not only that, there may be many different routes you could take which might make you confused. On the other hand, mentors have been in the same or a similar situation before, they can share their personal experience to offer you insights and advice that can help you clarify your goals, expand your areas of interest, and build professional contacts.

If you are interested, below are application forms for both potential mentees and mentors, please kindly fill out the appropriate form and submit. If you have any questions please email to miabment@yorku.ca.

Who can receive a mentor?

The MFAc Career Mentoring Program is open to every current and graduated MFAc student and alumni.

How does mentoring work?

01. Enroll in PROP and tell us your preference:

Enroll in the FACC6850 PROP (Pre-Registration Orbis Platform) and complete the questionnaire in which you can tell us what kind of mentor background you wish to be matched with. Please be careful in doing this. According to your response, I will locate suitable alumni to be your mentor

02. Upload your documents:

To give your mentor a better understanding of your situation, upload your resume, YorkU transcript bio, and cover page to PROP. If you have any questions, please email miabstud@yorku.ca

03. Mentee Application:

Upon receipt of all your documents, you will receive a mentee application to confirm your willingness to participate in the mentorship program. Please note that you can choose to decline or delay. You must respond within one week. It is your responsibility to check your email regularly.

04. Mentor Invitation:

Your application form and documents will be sent to potential matching alumni with an invitation to become your mentor.

05. Match successfully! Sign confidentiality agreements:

Finally, get to find your mentor details! To ensure that you can talk freely, both mentee and mentor must sign and return their confidentiality agreements.

06. Arrange two mentoring sessions with your mentor:

Communicate directly with your mentor to arrange for mentoring. Share experiences and resources to plan and refine how you will achieve career goals.

07. Follow up and complete the survey:

Kindly help us to improve by completing the survey after your two mentoring sessions.

Mentors and students can conduct one-on-one mentoring sessions through in-person meeting, phone chat, Skype, or email. The timeline and interaction style of the mentoring sessions are flexible and depend on the mentor and mentee. Here is a detailed flow chart to help students participate in the MIAB mentorship program. These events will provide great opportunities for students to ask questions related to obtaining future employment. Now MIAB is trying to collect questions from you which we will ask our presenters and mentors. Please fill out this short survey to help us. If you have any questions, please contact miabment@yorku.ca.
