Dear York University supporters of Canadian Studies,

As president of the Canadian Studies Network - Réseau d'études canadiennes, I am distressed to learn of the decision to cut funding to the 'Understanding Canada' programme aimed at assisting our Canadian Studies colleagues outside the country. I believe that this is a very short-sighted policy change, and that it fails to recognise the important work that our international colleagues do in advancing the knowledge of Canada. Studies for the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade have shown how effective the Canadian funds have been in fostering a high profile for Canadianist research and teaching, and how the well-targeted funds have been consistently matched and surpassed by investments in those countries.

Over the next few days, we will have to consider how to respond to this government decision, and I hope we can count on your support to encourage the government to reverse this decision.

This decision represents a serious loss for Canada.

Le gouvernement canadien vient d'annoncer la fermeture du programme 'Comprendre le Canada' qui avait pour but de promouvoir l'étude de notre pays à l'étranger. Il s'agit un changement de politique très néfaste pour notre pays. Le gouvernement ne reconnaît pas les contributions importantes que font nos collègues partout au monde pour avancer la compréhension du Canada. Selon des études du Ministère des affaires étrangères et commerce international, l'argent canadien a réussi à créer un profil impressionnant pour l'enseignement et la recherche sur le Canada dans plusieurs pays. En effet, l'argent a été très bien ciblé, et les autres pays ont contribué même davantage aux coûts des associations et des centre d'études canadiennes.

Dans les jours qui suivent, nous devons considérer comment répondre à cette décision gouvernementale, et j'espère que nous pouvons compter sur votre appui pour renverser cette décision.

Cette politique ne sert point les intérêts de notre pays.
