Join us on Thursday, April 10th at 1pm for The Alternative Campus Tour at Keele Campus led by Professor L. Anders Sandberg. All are welcome, including faculty, staff and graduate students from across the university.

Meeting Place and Itinerary

The Alternative Campus Tour will begin at 1pm outside the York University Subway Station. The tour is based on the idea of thinking critically about different sites and aspects of the university; to dig where you stand; to see the campus as a microcosm of the world; and to imagine and record alternative stories about it.

On the Tour we will explore many different sites and features of the campus, including gardens, sculptures, Indigenous sites, woodlots, and the names of buildings and faculties.

About Environmental Research Group (ERG)

The Environmental Research Group is one of the research clusters in the Robarts Centre for Canadian Studies. The group brings together graduate students and faculty at York University studying aspects of the Canadian environment from a broad range of disciplinary perspectives including sciences, social sciences, humanities, fine arts, health, and engineering. We strive to provide a forum for researchers to make connections, share findings and explore key issues in environmental research.

This session is a must-attend for graduate students seeking to establish a strong presence in their fields.

From Conference to Publication:

Learn how to turn your conference paper into a peer-reviewed publication! Editors share their insights for early-career scholars seeking to publish their work, explaining how you should identify an appropriate journal, for instance, and how to respond to revise and resubmit requests that are most likely to result in publication. In short, this is a session on everything you wanted to know about publishing in peer reviewed journals, but were afraid to ask!

Speakers

• Merouan Mekouar is an Associate Professor in the Department of Social Science at York University. With over 25 academic conferences under his belt, he will share his extensive experience presenting different research projects to diverse audiences in Canada and abroad. His latest book, "Doing Research as a Native: A Guide for Fieldwork in Illiberal and Repressive States," published by Oxford University Press earlier this year, examines the unique challenges faced by native scholars conducting research in their home countries.
• Isabelle Côté is an Associate Professor in the Department of Political Science at Memorial University of Newfoundland. Her work examines nativism in federal states, as well as the role of population movements on intrastate conflict and contentious politics in Asia and beyond. She has published in numerous journals in Political Science and Security Studies, and has co-edited two books ‘People Changing Places: New Perspectives on Demography, Migration, Conflict and the State’ (Routledge, 2019) and ‘Resettlement: Uprooting and Rebuilding Communities in Newfoundland and Labrador and Beyond’ (ISER Books, 2020). She was also awarded the 2024 President’s Award for Teaching (faculty), and the 2020 Canadian Political Science Association Teaching Award. She is currently on the executive board of Women in International Security-Canada (WIIS-C), and is the co-program chair of the 2025 Canadian Political Science Association conference.
• Elaine Coburn is Associate Professor of International Studies at York University and the current co-editor of the interdisciplinary Journal of Canadian Studies.  She previously edited Socialist Studies and she was a member of the editorial boards of the Canadian Review of Sociology in Canada and Socio in Paris, France. She has peer-reviewed for more than thirty journals in Indigenous studies, political science, political theory and sociology.

The Multicultural History Society of Ontario and the Robarts Centre for Canadian Studies present:

The Launch of a New, Searchable, Online Catalogue for the Archives of the Multicultural History Society of Ontario

The MHSO moved its office/archives to York University in 2023. Since then, it has focused its efforts on creating a new interface for researchers that addresses current needs in and expectations for access and functionality. Specifically, using modern technologies to enhance ‘discovery’, the Society has designed and developed a comprehensive online catalogue and implemented a search mechanism that will allow researchers to browse its holdings, retrieve specific record descriptions, and sort and extract different types of resources in a variety of meaningful ways.

The catalogue will be launched at an open, in-person event at the Robarts Centre, and the MHSO’s IM/IT consultant will demonstrate its features and use.

Since it was established in 1976, the Multicultural History Society of Ontario has collected and preserved archival records from over 120 ethnocultural, racialized and Indigenous communities. The unrivalled assemblage of primary source materials in its archives – tens of thousands of interviews, newspapers, photographs and textual records – documents the many different ways in which life in Ontario, and especially Toronto, has been experienced. Programming based on research conducted in the archives advances inter-community relations by helping Ontarians recognize multiple historical perspectives and gain inclusive understandings of our pasts.

Lianne Leddy is a member of Serpent River First Nation and grew up in Elliot Lake, Ontario. Leddy’s research focuses on Indigenous history in what is now Canada, with a focus on land, gender and historical methods. She is the author of Serpent River Resurgence: Confronting Uranium Mining at Elliot Lake (University of Toronto Press, 2022), which received three prestigious awards from the Canadian Historical Association in 2023: the Clio Prize for best book on Ontario history, the Indigenous History Book Prize and the Best Scholarly Book in Canadian History Prize.

Event description: Despite its earlier projections of exceptionalism, the academic literature is coming to realize that Canada may in fact not be so immune to the rise of global populisms. Followed by an introduction on the main theoretical and methodological approaches and debates in the populism literature, this workshop delves into the many historical and contemporary faces of populism at the federal and provincial levels, with examples from some of the recent research carried out by the Observatory of Populism in Canada.

Although ‘the public’ in public transportation is rarely defined or interrogated, discourses about public transportation are shot through with assumptions about public space, public goods, and public life. In this panel, researchers from different disciplines engage recent critical literatures in urban governance, public space, infrastructure, and mobility studies that have opened up new avenues for thinking about the ‘public’ dimensions of mass transportation. Who is the ‘public’ of public transportation? Through what processes are these publics constituted and mobilized? In whose interest are transport systems built and managed? How are transportation systems embedded in broader political projects? To what extent do existing public transportation offerings provide universal, accessible, sustainable, and democratic urban mobility? In responding to these and other questions, we seek to explore novel sites, theories, and methodologies concerning the contentious politics of urban public transportation.
