Event description: Despite its earlier projections of exceptionalism, the academic literature is coming to realize that Canada may in fact not be so immune to the rise of global populisms. Followed by an introduction on the main theoretical and methodological approaches and debates in the populism literature, this workshop delves into the many historical and contemporary faces of populism at the federal and provincial levels, with examples from some of the recent research carried out by the Observatory of Populism in Canada.

Although ‘the public’ in public transportation is rarely defined or interrogated, discourses about public transportation are shot through with assumptions about public space, public goods, and public life. In this panel, researchers from different disciplines engage recent critical literatures in urban governance, public space, infrastructure, and mobility studies that have opened up new avenues for thinking about the ‘public’ dimensions of mass transportation. Who is the ‘public’ of public transportation? Through what processes are these publics constituted and mobilized? In whose interest are transport systems built and managed? How are transportation systems embedded in broader political projects? To what extent do existing public transportation offerings provide universal, accessible, sustainable, and democratic urban mobility? In responding to these and other questions, we seek to explore novel sites, theories, and methodologies concerning the contentious politics of urban public transportation.

We invite you to attend the 40th anniversary Robarts Lecture featuring the poet, novelist, playwright, and essayist m. nourbeSe philip, who is launching a new edition of her acclaimed book-length poem Zong!, about the victims of the Zong massacre, when approximately 150 enslaved Africans were murdered for insurance purposes in 1781, reactions to which led to significant momentum in the British abolitionist movement.

m. nourbeSe philip is known for experimenting with literary form and her commitment to social justice, notably in Ontario. This extended 182-page poetry cycle is composed entirely of the words of the case report, Gregson vs. Gilbert, related to the murder of Africans on board a slave ship. Memory, history, and law collide and metamorphose into the poetics of the fragment.

Through the innovative use of fugal and counterpointed repetition, Zong! becomes an anti-narrative lament that stretches the boundaries of the poetic form, haunting the spaces of forgetting and mourning the forgotten. Zong! has been disseminated in three dramatic performances by theatrical directors and excerpts of Zong! have been used in six different visual arts installations by different artists in five countries.

When: September 12, 2024, lecture with Q&A from 4-5 pm, followed by a reception and book signing from 5-6 pm.

This lecture engages with visual activism, asking how this genre’s insurgent aesthetics may enact what I call willful pedagogies by urging viewers to unlearn pernicious stereotypes and essentialisms around minoritized populations.

Drawing from Trans cultural production and Black feminist pedagogies, I consider how Syrus Marcus Ware’s visual activism unscripts damage-centered educational trends while cultivating arts of living and futures otherwise.

Dr. Libe García Zarranz (she/her) is Associate Professor of cultural theory and literatures in English in the Department of Teacher Education at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). Her research sits at the intersection of Canadian literary and visual studies, affect theory, and trans studies.

Meeting place and itinerary
The Indigenous History Walk will meet at 3pm outside Skennen’ko:wa Gamig (The House of Great Peace). From there we will walk south to the Parson Site and then on to the Black Creek Watershed system. The tour will make several stops at points of historical significance to the Indigenous Nations with longstanding relationship to the territory upon which the Keele campus is located.
