This session focuses on Zakirah Allain’s graduate Major Research Project and aims to implement some of the artistic methods and PAR principles she expects to employ in her fieldwork. Her research focuses on youth migration from Saint Lucia for the purpose of higher education, exploring the causes/motivations for departure, local conditions, and dreams of students pursuing a “better life” when deciding between leaving and staying for their higher education.

Within the session, participants take Robin Kelley's concept of freedom dreams from noun to verb, exploring how we can dream of our Utopian Caribbean education systems and bring those unbounded dreams to reality. Through this, Zakirah leads people through a documentary viewing and artistic exercise to explore their thoughts, feelings, and solutions to ideas and issues presented in the documentary. From the session, participants are asked to create whatever their heart calls them to– visual art, comics, poems, lists of demands, scrap booking, etc.

Attendees (online attendees included) are welcome to bring any scrapbook/ personal supplies they may like to use (a notebook to take notes during the documentary, a friend).
