Nasra Smith is a PhD Candidate at the Department of English at York University. She also earned her Masters of English and Masters of Education at York University. Her dissertation focuses on coastal Eastern African literary cultures in the Indian Ocean. Her research interests are East African literature, Indian Ocean studies, comparative antiquities, postcolonial theory, and spatial humanities. She recently completed an international visiting fellowship at The Obama Institute for Transnational American Studies at Johannes Gutenberg Universität in Mainz, Germany, and her articles are published in Cultures of Citizenship in the Twenty-First Century, Aquatic Cartographies: Intersectional Readings of Water Imaginaries, and a book review of Neil Carrier and Tabea Scharrer’s Mobile Urbanity: Somali Presence in Urban East Africa in the African Studies Quarterly.
