Alicia Turner‘s new article, “Myanmar: Contesting Conceptual Landscapes in the Politics of Buddhism”, published in the Kyoto Review of Southeast Asia, examines the rise of nationalist and anti-Muslim sentiments in constructions of Burmese Buddhist identities. Turner uses examples of analyses of the MaBaTha to illustrate the limitations of viewing Buddhism and Burmese as fixed identities. She suggests that such analytical frameworks limit the extent to which we can engage with inventions of Buddhism that are not defined by nation, race, or exclusion.
