Over one hundred people attended the “Real Jobs, Living Wages Forum” in Scarborough, Ontario last week (16 March 2019). There Bangladeshi community leaders and allies came together to discuss the labour market challenges faced by skilled immigrants, especially women. The night also saw skits and cultural performances that kept spirits high.
The event centred around a project conducted by South Asian Women’s Rights Organization (SAWRO) in partnership with COSTI Immigrant Services and was hosted by YCAR faculty associate Soma Chatterjee (School of Social Work) and Sultana Jahangir (Director of SAWRO). The participants included community members, scholars from York University, the University of Toronto and Western University, activists from No One is Illegal, and the NDP MPP from Beaches-East York, Rima Berns-McGown.
Congratulations go out to the organizers, including our own Soma Chatterjee, on the successful event! Keep an eye out in April for a full report from her to be published in the Yfile.
