We are pleased to welcome Paramjit Singh to YCAR. Together with Cary Wu (Sociology), the pair are recipients of a YCAR Research Collaboration Fellowship. Their joint project looks at the structural determinants of urbanization in India and China. Based on preliminary research, they have identified the gap as arising from the differences in the path of economic growth, patterns of structural transformation along with institutional dissimilarities between the two nations. The primary output of the fellowship will be a journal article.
Dr Singh is Assistant Professor in the Department of Economics, Panjab University, Chandigarh. His research interests lie at the intersection of political economy, critical development studies, urban and agrarian change. Presently, he is working on three research questions: agrarian question/change under neoliberalism, industrial restructuring and environmental quality, and political trust and right-wing populism in India. He recently co-edited a volume titled Global Political Economy: A Critique of Contemporary Capitalism (Routledge 2021). Dr Singh will be a visitor at YCAR until 20 October 2022.
The YCAR Research Collaboration Fellowship exists to support intensive collaborations between a Faculty Associate of the Centre and one of their research partners at another research. The fellowship allows a collaborator (usually from Asia) to visit Toronto for the specific purpose of working on a research proposal, project or publication. Click here for more details. The next deadline is 19 May 2023.
