Congratulations to Vinoda Thevaseelan, recipient of the 2024 N. Sivalingam Award in Tamil Studies!
Nagaratnam Sivalingam’s legacy as a leader and advocate for the Tamil community in Canada continues through this prestigious award, supporting research that delves into Tamil language, history, culture, society, or the Tamil diaspora, with a scope that also embraces comparative research.
Vinoda is currently pursuing her Master of Social Work advanced standing program at York University. Her academic journey throughout her Bachelor of Social Work, and professional experience as a Mental Health and Addictions Counsellor have equipped her with a diverse skill set and a deep understanding of the challenges faced by marginalized communities.
Vinoda’s research is focused on investigating narratives surrounding Tamil resilience and resistance during genocidal violence, with a specific emphasis on the influences of Canadian nationalism and social work attitudes. As a first-generation Canadian with a deep connection to her Tamil identity, Vinoda’s work seeks to unravel the complexities of Tamil diasporic experiences, challenging prevailing narratives and fostering a more nuanced understanding.
