September 2023 | Multidisciplinary contemporary artist Leeroy New inspires York artists and scholars
Internationally acclaimed Filipino contemporary artist Leeroy New visited the School of Arts, Media, Performance and Design (AMPD) and the PSG at York University on 26 September 2023. The Philippine Studies Group (PSG) at York University is celebrating local research with its award of six community-engaged grants to local organizations.
“One of the core principles of the PSG is supporting community-engaged and community-grounded work. We are delighted to support exciting and innovating research creation projects from community organizations with a track record of working with the Filipinx community in Canada and beyond,” said Politics Professor and Ethel Tungohan.
The community-engaged research grants are one of the PSG’s 2023 activities, which are supported through funding from the Philippine Consulate General in Toronto.

May 2023 | PSG welcomes Karmina Contantino
The PSG welcomed 2022 Marshall McLuhan Fellow Karmina Constantino to York on 15 May 2023. Constantino, a veteran Filipina television broadcast journalist and an anchor with the ABS-CBN News Channel known for her hard-hitting questions to politicians, presented her compelling and timely talk: Revisiting the Basics: The Role of the Journalist in Critical Public Discourse and in Seeking Accountability in a Post-truth Era in the Philippines. March 2023 | Dr Kristian Saguin Visits York University
Dr Kristian Saguin (Associate Professor, Department of Geography, University of the Philippines Diliman) visited York between March 19th-22nd. Dr Saguin’s work engages with urban, agrarian and environmental studies in various sites in the Philippines.
February 2023 | Artist-in-Residency | Leo Lorilla and Pamela Corales
The grant the Philippine Studies Group at York received made it possible for Leo Lorilla and Pamela Corales, core performing artists of Bayanihan: the National Dance Company of the Philippines and faculty members of the Philippine Women’s University (PWU) in Manila, to be artists-in-residents in the Department of Dance at York University from 10 to 21 February 2023.
