AI Governance in Global Dynamics at the Crossroads of Geopolitics and Technopolitics

Friday, 13 September 2024 | York University

Artificial Intelligence (AI) holds transformative potential but also raises concerns about surveillance, data ethics, social inclusion, digital colonialism, and national security. Globally, there is unanimous agreement on the necessity of AI governance, yet there are significant differences in approaches to regulating AI. These regulatory approaches, influenced by the shifting dynamics of geopolitics and technopolitics, will play a critical role in shaping the global trajectory of AI. Hence, exploring the development of this global regulatory network and the interplay between the core and emerging regions presents a timely research area. This workshop aims to foster a holistic and comparative understanding of AI governance, emphasizing the role of geopolitical and technopolitical dynamics in shaping regulatory landscapes.

This workshop is organized by: Wenhong Chen (Professor of Media and Sociology, University of Texas at Austin); Muyang Li (Assistant Professor of Sociology, York University); and Zhifan Luo (Assistant Professor of Sociology, Concordia University)

The workshop is presented with the support of the Center for Entertainment and Media Industries at Moody College of Communication, University of Texas at Austin and the China Insights Fund along with the following York University units: York Centre for Asian Research, Institute for Research on Digital Literacies, York International, and the Faculty of Liberal Arts & Professional Studies.

This is a closed workshop but individuals with a specific interest in the topic are invited to email the organizers at ycar[at]yorku.ca, stating their specific interest in participating and their availability on the day of the workshop.
