Philippine Study Group

The Philippine Study Group brings together faculty  and graduate students with an interest in the Philippines and/or Filipino  migration and Diaspora. The group meets periodically for discussions based on  readings from the contemporary interdisciplinary literature in Philippine  Studies or to discuss each other’s research proposals and ideas.

Faculty and students in the group come primarily  from York University,  but also from other institutions in the Toronto region. They represent a variety of disciplinary backgrounds including:  anthropology, dance, education, environmental studies, fine arts, geography and  political science. Through collaborative and individual projects, they  contribute to deeper understandings of significant issues and questions in the  field, including:

• the structural  determinants and consequences of international labour migration
• local economic  development and remittances
• transformations  of class and gender identities through transnational processes
• race, culture  and globalization
