FYTIC project results shared at Ontario Human Capital Research and Innovation Fund symposium

Since 2010 the Filipino Youth Transitions in Canada (FYTIC) project at YCAR has been examining social mobility among Filipino youth in Canada. The project’s finding suggest that a combination of factors have resulted in relatively poor educational and employment outcomes for Filipino youth who arrived in Canada as children, or who were born here. These factors include the immigration programs and economic circumstances of their parents, the networks and role models through which youth navigate educational and employment opportunities, and the gender- and class-based racializations of Filipino identity.

The project has been funded by both the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and by the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU). On October 27th, members of the FYTIC team presented a summary of the research findings to researchers and staff members at MTCU as part of the Ontario Human Capital Research and Innovation Fund symposium. Philip Kelly, Alex Felipe and Jennilee Austria gave the presentation and research collaborators Ricky Esguerra (Community Alliance for Social Justice) and Christopher Sorio (Migrante Canada) also attended. The presentation was part of a panel on ‘Supporting Transitions to Postsecondary Education for Under-represented Students’. The report presented to MTCU is available at the project’s web site.
