Dr. Nadia Hasan is Assistant Professor in the School of Gender, Sexuality and Women’s Studies. She is an anti-racist, transnational feminist, and critical secularism studies scholar and activist. Her research and activism focus on systemic racism and Islamophobia in legal, administrative and discursive regimes and their relation to Muslim life.
Her focus on feminist and anti-racist research brought her to work in the human rights non-profit sector where she led major public advocacy campaigns against Islamophobia in Canada and directed research initiatives in partnership with academic institutions that are grounded in community organizing against racism, hate and discrimination.
Dr. Hasan co-authored the ground-breaking SSHRC-funded report on systemic Islamophobia at the Canada Revenue Agency, Under Layered Suspicion: A Review of CRA Audits of Muslim-led Charities. Her current project examines how Muslim women navigate the compounding impact of Bill 21 on employability in the context of COVID-19 lockdowns. She is also co-director of a SSHRC-funded project, "Uncovering Systemic Islamophobia in Canada," in partnership with the Institute of Islamic Studies at the University of Toronto. Her recent article, “Muslim Model Minorities and the Politics of Diasporic Piety,” engages with epistemic questions in feminist studies to develop a framework for analyzing Pakistani diasporic religious praxis. Her research has also looked at gender and nationalism in Pakistan and Pakistani diasporas.
Dr. Hasan is a frequent media commentator on issues related to Islamophobia and has appeared on CBC, CTV, Global News, CityNews, The Toronto Star, and The Globe and Mail, amongst other outlets.
