Yuying Hou is an exchange student in the Master of Geography program at York University the University. She is studying in the Global China Studies program at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Her research is dedicated to the study of urban inequality, urban villages, urban spatial perception and congestion studies in China.
In recent years, China has experienced rapid urbanization, but this has also led to serious urban-rural disparities and polarization between rich and poor within cities. “Urban villages” are a unique phenomenon that has emerged in the process of urbanization, referring to pre-existing villages that have been ‘swallowed up’ by urban expansion. These areas often become centralized residential areas for disadvantaged groups such as migrant workers. Her research is exploring how urban villages reflect the imbalance of China’s urban development as well as the living conditions and social integration issues faced by their residents.
