A Political Lexicon of Myanmar
Friday, 10 February 2023 | 10:00 to 12:30 EST | Room 857, Eighth Floor, Kaneff Tower, York University and virtually via Zoom
Speaker: Nick Cheesman, Australian National University
A Political Lexicon is a critical inquiry into how words animate politics. Across 16 entries, the lexicon stages dialogues about political speech and action in Myanmar. It offers readers venues in which to consider the history and contingency of ideas like power, race, patriarchy and revolution. Contention over these and other ideas, it shows, does not reflect the political world in which Myanmar’s people live—it realizes it.
Nick Cheesman is a scholar of law politics and social change at Australian National University whose important work requires no introduction to those studying Myanmar. We will be reading drafts of his new manuscript Myanmar: A Political Lexicon.
