This provocation critically interrogates the processes, positionality, and ethical considerations in understanding the researching the socio-digital exclusion embodied and constantly negotiated by older Filipino migrants in Australia and their support networks spread across countries.
Dr Earvin Charles Cabalquinto is an Australian Research Council (ARC) DECRA Research Fellow and Senior Lecturer at Monash University. His current projects focus on interrogating the dynamics and outcomes of digital inclusion and exclusion in a migration context.

Filipino Film Caravan
27–28 September 2024 | York University
Patrick Alcedo’s documentary, A Piece of Paradise, is one of the films being screened at York University on Saturday, 28 September as part of the Filipino Film Caravan.
Admission is free! All screenings will take place in Room 004 (Nick Mirkopoulos Screening Room), Accolade East Building, Keele Campus, York University, 4700 Keele Street, Toronto, M3J 1P3.
A Piece of Paradise is anchored in the immigrant lives of three women from the province of Aklan in the central Philippines. For close to 5 years, Alcedo followed their lives in Toronto and their journey back to Aklan to be with their families and loved ones. This film won both the Best Canadian Film Award and the Best First Feature Award at the 2017 Toronto Reel Asian International Film Festival.
On September 27, Friday (Screening 2) the highly acclaimed, Ma’ Rosa, by Brillante Mendoza and the film that catapulted the late Jacklyn Jose to international stardom when she won Best Actress at the Cannes Film Festival will be screened.
The Filipino Film Caravan celebrates the 75 years of diplomatic friendship between the Philippines and Canada. Films for this caravan are under the auspices of the Film Development Council of the Philippines and the Philippine Consulate General in Toronto. The event is co-presented by the York Centre for Asian Research at York University.
Everyone is invited to watch these critically acclaimed Filipino films (with English subtitles).

Dr. Annalisa Enrile, a Professor at the USC Suzanne Dworak-Peck School of Social Work, recently shared her extensive 30-year experience in building Philippine Studies in Los Angeles at an event. Her journey, from activism as a student to her current academic role, emphasized the importance of transnational collaborations between academia, community organizations, human services, and selected private sector partners for collective impact. She highlighted her key contributions in three areas: Global Immersions and Exchanges, Community Collaborations, and Institutional Permanence.
Globalizing Filipino Songs, Bodies, and Sounds: Homeplace beyond Homeland

Homeplace is an important marker of Filipino identity in such contexts of population and geographic mobility as theorized by Cuba and Hummon (1993). Given Filipino geographical mobility, the depiction of homeplace in the diaspora almost always references geographic materiality. With the recognition that diaspora both references and informs a material homeland, Professor Ricardo D. Trimillos (University of Hawai’I at Manoa) will present selected musical manifestations of homeplace.
Human Rights in the Philippines: Challenges and the Fight for a Democratic Future

Neri Colmenares, 62, is a veteran human rights lawyer and activist who was detained for four years when the Philippines was under Martial Law. In 2018, he filed the second petition accusing President Duterte of murder and crimes against humanity before the International Criminal Court on behalf of eight victims of the “war on drugs". He was also a co-petitioner in one of the 37 constitutional challenges to the Anti-Terrorism Act of 2020. Colmenares served as Bayan-Muna representative in the lower house from 2007 to 2016. As Bayan-Muna representative, he championed senior citizens' welfare, a genuine agrarian reform program for farmers, higher wages for laborers and protection of human rights.
