N. Sivalingam Award in Tamil Studies

Nagaratnam Sivalingam was a pioneer and leader of the Tamil community in Canada, who dedicated his life to promoting both Tamil culture and issues of concern to the community.

This award is intended to encourage and promote research with a substantive focus on Tamil language, history, culture, society or the Tamil diaspora, but comparative research is also eligible. The award is tenable to provide financial support to full-time graduate students at York University who have demonstrated the need to conduct fieldwork, research or Tamil language training to complete a thesis or dissertation on such a topic. The award is open to domestic and international students currently enrolled in graduate studies at York University who have a grade point average of at least B+. Financial need will also be considered. The Award will be administered by the York Centre for Asian Research (YCAR) and will be given annually to candidate selected by its Awards Committee.

A two-page report will be required from awardees within two weeks of returning to Canada from fieldwork or within completion of research for a dissertation or thesis or at the conclusion of language studies.
