The Penny and John Van Esterik Award for Graduate Research on Southeast Asia

The Penny and John Van Esterik Award or Graduate Research on Southeast Asia will be granted annually to a graduate student conducting research on Southeast Asia especially where such research will require the student to travel to Southeast Asia. Preference will be given to doctoral students carrying out historical, cultural or artistic projects in the region.  If no such candidates are available, masters students studying any appropriate academic topic in the region will be considered. Canadian Citizens, permanent residents, protected persons and international students are all eligible.

Applications will be adjudicated by the York Centre for Asian Research (YCAR) based on 1) Academic quality of the propose research, and 2) the applicant’s grades.

Financial needs (as determined through the Student Financial Profile) may also be considered when selecting recipients.

One award is offered and is valued at $2,000. It is intended to support research activities, including travel.

Within two weeks upon their return, the successful student will be required to provide YCAR with a two-page report that details how their research benefited from the Fellowship as well as describing how their newly acquired knowledge will aid future learning and research.

The Award was established by Penny and John Van Esterik to help York students develop expertise in Southeast Asia. Penny and John are cultural anthropologists with a wide range of research experiences in the region. Penny retired from the Department of Anthropology in 2014, and continues to conduct research on maternal and child nutrition and other topics. John taught a range of courses for Anthropology and the Division of Social Science until his retirement from York University in 2008.

The application deadline is Monday, 03 February 2025 before 16:00 EST. Late or incomplete applications will not be accepted. The successful applicant will be notified within 30 days.
