Throughout most of East Asian history, the language of communication between peoples of the major entities (China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam) was “literary Sinitic” (sometimes also known as literary Chinese). Indeed, for centuries, Japan, Korea, and Vietnam did not have written vernaculars of their own, meaning that translation was largely unnecessary. Nonetheless, there also developed translation efforts across national borders among the various local languages. Our conference will address a host of topic around this issue, such as literary translations from Chinese to Japanese, poetic translation from Chinese into Korean, Vietnamese translation of Chinese texts, and much more.
