Vivienne Poy Hakka Graduate Research Award

Poy Hakka Award Poster 03 Feb 2025

The Award will be granted annually to a graduate student conducting research on topic(s) related to the Hakka population, their cultures, histories and geographies anywhere in the world. Canadian citizens, permanent residents, protected persons and international students who have a demonstrated interest in this topic are all eligible. The award is open to full-time and part-time students t York University.

Hakka could be defined as personal, relational and communal identity of a subgroup of Han Chinese whose settlements are scattered worldwide. We seek research that deepens understanding of the construction of Hakka identity, its relevance in different locales; how Hakka identities are constructed, mobilized and contested at different moments in time; what Hakka means in different social, political and economic contexts from a historical or/and contemporary perspective.

Applications should include:

  • Two-page research proposal describing how your research will contribute to Asian and Asian diaspora research as represented by Hakka studies
  • One-page summary of your personal and educational background
  • A short statement of how you intend to use the funds
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • An unofficial copy of current York University transcript of marks (accessible through Student Web Services)
  • Copy of completed Student Financial Profile (accessible at: https://sfs.yorku.ca/aid/sfp)
  • Other relevant documentation, including Human Participants Research Protocol (if applicable).
  • Endorsement from two York University faculty members

Applications will be adjudicated by the York Centre for Asian Research (YCAR) based on 1) academic quality of the propose research, and 2) the applicant’s grades. Financial needs (as determined through the Student Financial Profile) may also be considered when selecting recipients.

One award is offered and is valued at C$5,000. It is intended to support research activities, including travel. The successful student will receive the total amount of the award and will not have their funding package reduced by the amount of the award.

Within two weeks upon their return from or completion of their fieldwork, the successful student will be required to provide YCAR with a two-page report that details how their research benefited from the Award as well as describing how their newly acquired knowledge will aid future learning and research.

This Award was established by the Honourable Vivienne Poy in 2020 to encourage the development of Hakka research and scholarship at York University and promote this scholarship in Canada and internationally.
