Channelling student success into positive, healthy change

As a society facing a vast array of complex health challenges, all eyes are on empowering the bright, compassionate minds and innovative, equitable solutions that will keep all people healthier, longer. To prepare the future health leaders who will step up to this monumental task, the Faculty of Health at York University is equipping students with the skills, expertise and experience needed to excel as they embark on their successful careers, poised to create positive, healthy change for our communities and the world.

At the core of the Faculty’s teaching, research, partnerships, and institutional culture is a commitment to providing students with the knowledge and skills to succeed while advancing accessibility, diversity, equity, inclusion, reconciliation and social justice. No matter which degree they choose to pursue – whether Global Health, Health Studies, Kinesiology & Health Sciences, Neuroscience, Nursing or Psychology – our students’ education and capacity to succeed are enriched by opportunities to learn from and collaborate with leading teachers and researchers, while also taking their learning opportunities beyond the classroom.

Our students directly contribute to positive change through meaningful community engagement and experiential and work-integrated learning alongside influential and impactful community and health organizations at home and abroad, including hospitals, community health and recreation centres, schools, government agencies and non-governmental organizations. These experiences are not only opportunities for students to gain real-world experience, preparing them for career success or to pursue further study at professional and graduate schools, but they also get them up close and personal with our most complex contemporary health and societal challenges – from social and economic inequality to changing disease patterns, the threat of future pandemics to the health impacts of climate change.

Through cutting-edge research opportunities like those offered at our Dahdaleh Institute for Global Health Research, we are connecting York students with the researchers, thought leaders and infrastructure that will position them as the problem solvers who will help overcome these 21st-century global health challenges.

Enriching the learning experience also means providing opportunities that enhance both academic and non-academic skills. Through the Student Success Programs offered by our on-campus Calumet and Stong Colleges, students strengthen their study skills with peer-assisted study sessions and peer tutoring, develop their leadership and entrepreneurship skills with the Agents of Change incubator program, and foster connections and friendships through health and wellness workshops and student clubs.

It is this unique combination of academic and field-based opportunities at the Faculty of Health, where students work with faculty, staff, and community partners to nurture a broad understanding of perspective and a socially conscious, forward-thinking approach to health, that prepares them to become the thinkers, leaders and principled doers of tomorrow who will ensure a healthy and just world.
