Courses taught (Master's level) have included lectures, seminars and workshops in: Introduction to Environmental Studies; Planning Processes; Planning Theory; Strategic Planning and Management; Policy Analysis and Formulation; Environmental Planning; Environmental Impact Assessment; Energy in Urban Settlements; Creative Problem-Solving; Synthesis in Environmental Studies; and PhD Research Seminar. Supervision of dissertation, directed readings, independent studies, major papers and field experience. Participation in dissertation/thesis committees and oral examinations.

Advisor to over 250 graduate students.

Thesis evaluator, external examiner and guest lecturer at various universities in Canada and in Africa.

Responsible for 20-person multidisciplinary team administering the Town Planning Act and providing assistance to urban and rural municipalities across the province. Study Director for Town Planning Act Review, 1968-69, which resulted in a new Planning Act.

RESEARCH (since 1980)

Resources for environmental planning. Preparation of resourcebook for environmental planners and managers including theory, background data, literature review, and 99 case studies drawn from a network of practitioners across Canada. Funded by Environment Canada; published 1980.

Energy in the community. Report on energy conservation and the municipal planner, including a review of energy/land use relationships, energy-conserving measures available to planners and a survey of Canadian practice; funded by Energy, Mines and Resources Canada, 1979-80. Documentation of 40 case studies of energy conservation through land use planning in Canada and the United States; funded by Environment Canada, 1980-81. Study of residential density and energy conservation; funded by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, 1985 and York University, 1986. Evaluation of Ontario's Energy Conservation Through Land Use Planning Program; supported by York University, 1984-87.

Social impact assessment and social equity. Study of concepts and practice of social impact assessment and implications for the federal Environmental Assessment and Review Process; funded by Federal Assessment and Review Office, 1979-80. Study of equity issues in waste management, supported by York University, 1988-90. Studies of social equity in waste management for citizens groups in Greater Toronto Area, 1993-95.

Integrated resource planning and management. Development and editing of a book on integrated approaches to resource planning and management, including a survey of the field, for The Banff Centre, 1985-86. Study of integrated land/water planning and management in the Great Lakes Basin, supported by York University and SUNY-Buffalo, 1986-87.

Learning style. Relationship of learning styles of FES graduate students to preparation and execution of their plans of study, 1991-94.

Strategic planning and personality type. EdD dissertation research on impacts of personality-type preference on strategic planning and management, 1990-95.

Work and environment. Changing nature of work and how to enhance the capacity of environmental-studies students to find, create and engage in meaningful work, 1996 to present.

Planning, change and transition. Examination of planning, approached generically, and its relationship with change and transition, including influence of personality-type preference. Ongoing.
