Psychological Tests for Student Use

The purpose of this website is to help students who wish to use copyrighted tests as part of their research project with that part of the project that is often most time consuming - the obtaining of permission to use the test. With student research often under extreme time constraints, even a small delay can be disastrous. So if test authors are hard to find or are slow to respond if found, the project may never get off the ground.

There are only a limited number of tests on this website. Some are well known, others are not. The tests are all copyrighted but the test authors have given their permission to have their tests placed on the website with the knowledge that they will be downloaded and used by student researchers. They are aware that students will not seek further permssion to use the tests. In general, the name of a test gives a good idea of what that test measures. In instances where this is not obvious, a short description is provided.

Information about the validity and reliability of these tests is not included at this site. Finding this information is something that all students should do before using a test; thus, I leave it to students to verify for themselves that the tests that they select are psychometrically sound. A good source of such information is Robinson, Shaver & Wrightsman (1991) for many of the test included at this site.

Robinson, J.P., Shaver, P.R., & Wrightsman, L.S. (Eds). (1991). Measures of personality and social psychological attitudes. San Diego, CA: Academic Press.

For your information, I have listed a number of common questions that I have received in the past.

1. Do I have your permission to use the test? Answer: The tests are not mine and therefore I cannot give you permission to use the test. All that I can say is that the test authors gave me permission to put their test on my website and that they know that students will use the tests without seeking further permission. If this is not sufficient to satisfy your ethics review requirements then you should find the contact information for the test authors as I did, by looking in journals or on the Internet.

2. Do I have your permission to modify the test or translate it to another language? Answer. Again, the test is not mine and you should contact the test authors.

3. How do I score and/or interpret the test(s). Answer: All of the information that I have about scoring is on the website. If you need more information, check in the literature or contact the test authors. Information about test score interpretation can also be found in the literature.

The tests are available as a Portable Document Format (pdf) file or a Word 2002 file - click on the type of file that you would like to use. You may be able to cut and paste the pdf file for your use, deleting information (such as the scoring key) that should not be seen by the participants. If order to read and print the pdf file, you must have a copy of Adobe Reader installed on your computer. If necessary, you can download a free copy of Adobe Reader. The Word file can be downloaded and edited using any word processor that can open and read the file.
