Events:

The Community Safety Department is hosting another Community Safety Week for the Winter Semester here at York University. Through March 17 to March 20, Community Safety Week focuses on promoting safety awareness, fostering community engagement, and providing resources and support to address safety concerns. During this week, a range of activities and workshops are organized to engage students, faculty, and staff members on topics related to personal, community, and environmental safety.

A few of the events include:

  • Tabling at all three campus locations – to provide more information on the department and tips on how to maintain personal safety.
    • Keele – Monday, March 17- 11 am - 2pm Vari Hall
    • Glendon – Monday, March 17- 11 am - 2pm The Centre of Excellence (North Corridor and Lobby Area)
    • Markham - Monday, March 17 11 am- 2pm The Atrium Lobby
  • We will be launching a Community Safety Survey to gather valuable input from staff, faculty, and students regarding their safety concerns and experiences with the Community Safety Department.
  • YSS Naming Campaign. We're excited to involve the York University community in an important step toward enhancing safety and community engagement. As part of a review to better align with a community centric safety model, you have the chance to vote on the proposed options for renaming the title of the frontline security staff.
  • Community Safety Information Session on YU Learn – Tuesday, March 18 1-2pm. Join the Campus Relations Officials for an online information session about how the Community Safety Department fosters a safe and inclusive campus environment, key safety initiatives, and available resources. The session will include a Q&A period, providing an opportunity to ask questions and gain insights directly from the team.
  • Situational Awareness Training on YU Learn – Wednesday, March 19 1-2:30pm. This course provides an in-depth understanding of situational awareness (SA) and its critical role in personal safety. Participants will learn how to recognize different awareness levels, identify risks, and respond effectively to potential threats. The session covers the impact of stress and distractions on perception, comprehension, and decision-making, using real-world examples and interactive discussions.

  • Virtual Panel: Navigating Homelessness – Community Perspectives and Solutions Zoom Webinar Thursday March 20 1-2:30pm. Join us for an engaging panel discussion on "Navigating Homelessness: Community Perspectives and Solutions," where we will explore the critical issue of homelessness in our communities. This event aims to bring together diverse voices, including community services, and subject matter experts, to share their insights and experiences regarding the challenges and innovative solutions responding to and addressing the complex needs of individuals experiencing homelessness on post-secondary campuses.
