Biology 5139 3.0: Advanced Exercise I: Muscle


Course Description

Advanced topics in exercise physiology and biochemistry of muscle, including energy metabolism, fatigue, cell signaling and molecular adaptations to exercise and disease states.  Discussion of original research articles in exercise physiology.

The following topics will be discussed:
The neuromuscular junction;
Excitation-contraction (E-C) coupling;
Motor unit recruitment and fiber types;
Reactive oxygen species;
Cell signaling and muscle response to contractile activity;
Energy metabolism: PCr and adenine nucleotides;
Energy metabolism: lipids and carbohydrates;
Mechanisms of muscle adaptations to chronic use and disuse;
Molecular aspects of resistance training;
Gene expression, mitochondrial biogenesis and endurance performance;
Human vs. Animal experimental models in muscle physiology;
Apoptosis in muscle;
Gene expression during recovery from exercise.

York undergraduate courses Arts/Science Kinesiology 4010 3.0: Physiology of Exercise or equivalent.
