Biology 5153. 1.5: Physiology of Global Change

Course Description

Term: Fall 2022
Course Director: Carol Bucking
Day/Time: Wednesday @ 1pm
Location: R S156
Start and End Dates: September 28 to November 09, 2022

This course focuses  on global environmental change (past and present) covering broad ranges   of topics: from changing global temperatures to ocean acidification. Changing environments are discussed in terms of the resulting physiological stresses and adaptations that have occurred/are occurring in diverse taxa. Emphasis is placed on basic physiology principals, biochemistry, and molecular biology in the context of evolution and ecology.

Environmental change is a source of physiological stress and one of the main drivers of physiological adaptation across diverse groups of organisms. This course focuses on global environmental change (past and present) covering a broad range of topics: from changing global temperatures, to ocean acidification, to changes in oxygen availability. These global changes are discussed in terms of the resulting physiological stresses and adaptations that have both occurred and are presently occurring. Both vertebrate and invertebrate organisms are used as models. Emphasis is placed on basic principles of physiology, along with biochemistry and molecular biology. A holistic approach is featured and both classical and modern techniques and studies are explored. Overall, a genome to biome approach is used in the perspective of environmental adaptations, illuminating evolution and ecology in a physiological context.
