Simran Kalsi
Simran Kalsi graduated with B.A. Hons in Actuarial Science in 2018. She is now a full time Actuarial Analyst with Mercer, which is the world’s largest human resources consulting firm. When Simran came to York, she intended not only to be enrolled in an interesting program but also to get really ready for an employment upon graduation. She found that the Actuarial Science program at York University addressed her plans perfectly well. “York University is determined to continue growing and promoting its Actuarial Science program, which undoubtedly gains more recognition in the industry,” says Simran. She then adds that “the way courses are designed at York is unique in the sense that they don't just prepare for the preliminary actuarial examinations but are also very theory-based. They [the courses], therefore, take a very in-depth approach, which helped me to understand well the theories behind the applications.”
Simran emphasizes the importance of the regular on-campus information / networking sessions, where representatives and recruiters from insurance companies meet actuarial students. She says that these sessions helped her getting connected with the “right” people from the insurance industry. Put in her own words, “This helped me to understand what is expected and to gain the set of skills I needed to work on to succeed in this field.” Before graduating from the program, Simran completed an internship with Manulife and also landed a full-time Actuarial Analyst position with Mercer Canada.
