Description: Math modeling links classroom knowledge in mathematics and computer science to solve real problems in everyday life. It engages students in mathematical reasoning, creative problem solving and team working. We believe that students benefit greatly if they learn at an early age that how exciting and valuable it is to apply mathematics to real world problems.
As the 4th International Mathematical Modelling Challenge (IM2C) is coming, we hold the three-day “Math for Real” workshop to help students gain confidence in the competition.
The Workshop is targeted for students in Grades 9-12. Participants will have inspiring experience in modelling, programming, technical writing, team-building, and most importantly master the modeling process that applies to any modeling problem. In addition, feature talks given by professors will take you to unexpected places.
Registration fee:
• $150 per participant (Lunches included; Seats limited up to 20).
• Students with financial needs can apply for fee waiver if a photocopy of family income-tax return is provided

Special Guest: Richard Hoshino, Quest University Canada
Richard Hoshino is the 2017 winner of the Canadian Mathematical Society’s Adrien Pouliot Award. Dr. Hoshino teaches mathematics at Quest University Canada, an innovative liberal arts and sciences university located in Squamish, British Columbia. Prior to his arrival at Quest in 2013, Richard was a post-doctoral fellow at the National Institute of Informatics in Tokyo (2010-2012), and was a mathematician with the Government of Canada (2006-2010), leading the mathematics and data exploration section at the Canada Border Services Agency. He has published 27 research papers across numerous fields, including graph theory, marine container risk-scoring, biometric identification, and sports scheduling. He has consulted for a billion-dollar professional baseball league, as well as three Canadian TV game shows (Qubit, Splatalot, Spin-Off). Richard holds a B.Math. from the University of Waterloo, a B.Ed. from Queen’s University, and an M.Sc. and Ph.D. from Dalhousie University. The Math Olympian is his first novel.
