H.G. Wells famously said “for complete initiation as an efficient citizen […], it is as necessary to be able to compute, to think in averages and maxima and minima, as it is now to be able to read and to write.” Mathematics education in primary and secondary schools is thus of vital importance. In our Mathematics for Education program, students have the opportunity to learn mathematics, and also to explore various pedagogical aspects of teaching and learning mathematics.

Honours Major (BA or BSc)
Honours Minor (BA or BSc)
You can complete your teacher qualification with a second degree of BEd (Bachelor of Education) either concurrently or consecutively.
In the BEd concurrent program , you do the BA/BSc and BEd degrees at the same time to become a qualified teacher in Ontario. You can get into the concurrent program by applying directly from high school to both the BA/BSc and the BEd programs.
In the BEd consecutive program , you first complete your BA/BSc degree and then apply to the BEd program.
Outlook: While there are local (GTA) surpluses of teachers in some subjects and levels, there is demand for teachers willing to move or with attractive combinations of teachables, such as math and French.
Courses:
An Honours program takes 4 years. The Specialized Honours degree requires more Math/Stats courses. A Major can be combined with another Major or Minor, but it doesn’t have to be. A Minor must be combined with a Major degree. For a BA, you also take courses such as psychology or economics. For a BSc, you also take courses such as physics, earth and atmospheric science, biology, or computer science.

- LE/EECS 1560 3.00;
- SC/MATH 1021 3.00; SC/MATH 1131 3.00; SC/MATH 1200 3.00; SC/MATH 1300 3.00; SC/MATH 1310 3.00; SC/MATH 2022 3.00; SC/MATH 2030 3.00;
- at least nine MATH credits at 3000-level or above, including at least six credits at 4000 level to include SC/MATH 4100 3.00 or SC/MATH 4400 6.00;
- at least three credits above should be chosen from proof-based courses approved by the director such as SC/MATH 2001 3.00; SC/MATH 3050 6.00 or SC/MATH 3052 6.00; SC/MATH 3021 3.00; SC/MATH 3022 3.00; SC/MATH 3141 3.00; SC/MATH 3260 3.00; SC/MATH 4160 3.00.
There are three parts to your degree requirements:
- University-Wide Residency Requirement
- Faculty-Wide Degree Requirements
- B.A.: General Education and Outside-major
- B.Sc.: Foundational Science, Science outside-major and Non-science
- Program-Specific Degree Requirements including the Math/Stat core.
