Background
To acknowledge the extraordinary research achievements and dedication to mentoring graduate student trainees in the Faculty of Science (FSc). Categories are as follows:
- Excellence in Graduate Mentorship Award
- Early Career Researcher Award
- Established Researcher Award
Eligibility
Early Career Researcher Award
- A maximum of 12 years since receiving their PhD (maternity, parental, medical or family related responsibility leaves are not counted as part of the 12 year period; however, such periods must be identified in the nomination letter).
- Has established a high-quality, independent research program involving the training of Highly Qualified Personnel (HQP).
Established Researcher Award
- A minimum of 12 years since receiving their PhD.
- Has established a research program of international stature involving the training of Highly Qualified Personnel (HQP).
Excellence in Graduate Mentorship Award
- Recognizes an outstanding commitment to the supervision, education and training of FSc graduate students.
Required Materials
Early and Established Researcher Awards
The candidate must be an FSc faculty member with a full-time tenured or tenure-track appointment at York and must be nominated by another York faculty member. The nomination letter should describe how the candidate not only satisfies but exceeds the above criteria. The nomination package must include nominator details, a nomination letter, summary of most significant contributions and a complete CV (NSERC Canada Common CV recommended) which must be submitted electronically to FSc Research Services through Machform. A nomination letter for the Researcher Awards should normally provide strong evidence over the past three years while at York University for:
- High quality scholarly activity with an explanation of discipline specific criteria and role in the scholarly
activity. - External recognition (prestigious awards, professional society memberships, community involvement).
- Contributions to the training of HQP and encouragement of career and professional development.
- Contributions to the advancement and mobilization of knowledge and its impact on society.
Application Process for Excellence in Graduate Mentorship Award
The candidate must be an FSc faculty member with a full-time, tenure-track or tenured, appointment at York. Nominations can be made either by a York faculty member or a graduate student with support from the relevant Graduate Program Director. The nomination package must include nominator details, a nomination letter, up to 3 supporting letters from students and a complete CV (Canada Common CV recommended) which must be submitted electronically to FSc Research Services through Machform. A nomination letter for the Excellence in Graduate Mentorship Award should normally provide evidence over the past three years that a supervisor:
- Establishes a supportive environment for research and scholarly activities.
- Fosters independence.
- Creates opportunities and assists with transitioning to career and/or leadership roles.
Evaluation Process
Only complete applications received by the deadline will be reviewed by the Research and Awards Committee (RAC). In the event that a member of the RAC is nominated or provides a support letter for one of the awards, that member will not participate in the selection process for the award. The award recipients will be selected by the FSc Dean based on the recommendation by the RAC.
