Background

The Guggenheim Foundation offers Fellowships to exceptional individuals in pursuit of scholarship in any field of knowledge and/or creation of any artform, under the freest possible conditions and irrespective of race, color, or creed.

Fellowships are intended for mid-career individuals who have demonstrated exceptional capacity for productive scholarship or exceptional creative ability in the arts and who exhibit great promise for their future endeavours.


Eligibility

Fellowships are open to any citizen or permanent resident of Canada or the United States.


Required Materials

Details are available on the Application Resources section of the website. While the application form is expected to be available soon on the Guggenheim Fellowship website, based on last year’s competition the full nomination likely will consist of the following:

  • The application form.
  • References – Up to four names and addresses of references who will be contacted for letters of recommendation via email by the Foundation.
  • Career Narrative – Brief narrative of the nominee’s career, describing previous achievements.
  • List of Work – A list of work which may include the following depending on your field: publications, exhibitions, performances, compositions, films or video tapes.
  • Statement of Plans – A statement of plans for the period for which the Fellowship is requested.
    • For applicants in Science or Scholarship, a plan of research which should be no more than 3 pages.
    • For applicants in the Arts, a brief statement of plans describing the proposed creative work in general terms which should not exceed 3 pages.
  • You may also be asked to submit samples of your work after your application has been submitted. Further instructions would be provided for this.
