The fellowship of the RSC comprises distinguished scholars from all branches of learning who have made remarkable contributions in the arts, the humanities, the social sciences, and the sciences, as well as in Canadian public life.

RSC College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists

The Members of the College are Canadians and Permanent Residents who, at an early stage in their career, have demonstrated a high level of achievement. The criteria for election is excellence, and membership is for seven years.

Eligibility

RSC Fellowship

  • Fellows are those with exceptional and original publications, intellectual achievements, and creative activities. Their achievements are in the arts, the 2 humanities, the social sciences, and the sciences.
  • They are either Canadian citizens or Canadian Permanent Residents for at least three years at their time of nomination.
  • The RSC embraces equity and diversity, methodological and epistemological openness, and the full range of disciplinary excellence. It welcomes nominations from all intellectual endeavours across linguistic, gender, racial, regional, and institutional boundaries. The RSC also judges these nominations without bias. The RSC selection process seeks to ensure that recognition and inclusion are accorded to First Nations, Inuit, and Métis candidates.
  • York encourages nominations from equity-deserving candidates to reflect the diversity of our faculty complement.
  • Earlier career scholars may wish to consider the Royal Society of Canada’s College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists.

RSC College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists

  • The Members of the College are Canadians and Permanent Residents who, at an early stage in their career, have demonstrated a high level of achievement.
  • Candidates must be no more than 15 years from the conferral of the PhD or equivalent qualification. For the cohort of 2025, a candidate must have received his or her PhD or equivalent no earlier than January 1, 2009.
    • The RSC will consider an exemption period of up to three (3) years for those who have had a career interruption for the purpose of maternity, childrearing, illness, or health-related family responsibilities. Where there are questions of equivalence eligibility, the Honorary Secretary will provide the conclusive determination on behalf of the RSC Council.
  • Nominees may be re-nominated any number of times, provided they still meet the eligibility requirements

Required Materials

RSC Fellowship

Internal nomination packages are due September 11. Faculties are asked to email Abby Vogus (avogus@yorku.ca) the following, which will then be reviewed by the MAAC:

  • A draft of the Detailed Appraisal (1,200 words max). Please see the Nomination Guide for a template.
  • Nominee’s current CV (50 pages max, including publications, key scholarly presentations, awards and distinctions and grants)
  • A written confirmation from at least 3 potential reference letter writers along with a short bio of the letter writers. An email confirmation is sufficient.

Nominees will work with the SIRI Specialist and Faculty-based research support personnel (as appropriate) to prepare the full application package for submission, which will likely include:

  • Completed webform
  • Letter from the Primary Nominator (i.e., the President)
  • Short citation attesting to the significance of the nominee’s work (70 words max in English; 85 in French)
  • Detailed appraisal of the nominee’s scholarship or artistic achievements (1,200 words max in English, 1450 in French)
  • Letters of reference (number varies based on discipline) (750 words max in English, 900 in French)
  • Short biographical note for each referee (250 words max in English, 300 in French)
  • Nominee’s curriculum vitae (50 pages max)

RSC College of New Scholars, Artists and Scientists

Internal nomination packages are due on September 11. Faculties are asked to email SIRI Specialist Abby Vogus (avogus@yorku.ca) the following components of a nomination, which will then be reviewed by MAAC:

  • A signed 1-page letter on Faculty letterhead from the Dean or Associate Dean of Research endorsing the nomination(s). This document should inform the multi-disciplinary MAAC about norms in the field related to publishing, research funding and other markers of accomplishment.
  • A Candidate Statement reflecting on how their work will contribute to the College during the seven-year term (max 500 words English; 600 French).
  • A draft of the Detailed Appraisal (max 1,200 words English; 1,450 French).
  • The nominee’s current CV (max 10 pages).
  • Written commitments from at least 2 referees to each provide a letter of reference, along with a bio of each potential referee. An email from the referee will suffice (to be secured by nominee/Faculty Research Office).

Nominees will work with the SIRI Specialist and Faculty-based research support personnel (as appropriate) to prepare the full application package for submission. Completed nominations will likely include:

  • A completed Nomination Form, which includes a 70-word (85 in French) citation.
  • A cover letter from the primary nominator (i.e., the York University President – to be secured by SIRI).
  • Two signed reference letters on letterhead from a person of authority on the candidate and their field, along with a brief biography of the referee (to be secured by SIRI).
  • A candidate statement reflecting on how their work will contribute to the College during the seven-year term (500 words English/600 French).
  • Detailed appraisal (1200 words English/1450 French).
  • The nominee’s current CV (10 pages max).

Nomination Process

RSC Fellowship

Candidates must be nominated either directly by a current Fellow or by an Institutional Member of the RSC (i.e., a nomination package submitted by York University endorsed by the President). In either case, candidates are encouraged to take advantage of available University resources and to seek peer advice throughout the development of their nomination file. Note that nominations are valid for one year only.

Nominations to the College can be initiated by Members of the College (Members), Fellows of the RSC (Fellows), and Institutional Members (IMs) of the RSC. In all cases, candidates are encouraged to take advantage of available University resources and to seek peer advice throughout the development of their nomination file. York encourages nominations from equity-deserving candidates to reflect the diversity of our faculty complement.


How to Apply

York University researchers are reminded that all applications for external research funding, including Letters of Intent, must be reviewed and approved by the Office of Research Services before they are submitted to the granting agency.  For internal approval, the application must be accompanied by a completed ORS Checklist, which requires the Dean’s signature.  Please send the complete application, with the finalized budget and a completed ORS checklist to sciapps@yorku.ca, five days prior to agency deadline.
