Background

Massey College is an independent college situated in the University of Toronto campus, almost directly opposite the Munk School of Global Affairs and very close to the Robarts Library. It consists of a junior fellowship, made up of graduate students, and a senior fellowship, consisting primarily of faculty.

The Fellowship provides for a shared office space in the College for a period of eight months during the academic year, and the status of a full Senior Resident of the College. As well, all York-Massey Fellows retain their membership in the College as members of the Alumni Association for as long as they choose to maintain these memberships.

During the Fellowship, York-Massey Fellows are expected to participate in the activities of the College and contribute to fulfilling its mission.

Two Fellowships are available, with one Fellowship reserved for a faculty member undertaking their first sabbatical.

Selection Criteria

York-Massey Fellowships are open to York faculty members planning to go on sabbatical or other leave during the 2025-26 academic year.

Required Materials

Interested individuals are asked to submit:

  • a current curriculum vitae, and
  • a letter which outlines proposed research activities during the sabbatical/leave, explains reasons for wishing to be at Massey College, and describes (with examples, as appropriate) how the applicant will engage with the Massey College community. Scholars undertaking their first sabbatical should indicate this in their letter.

There is no page limit for the letter; however, previously successful applicants submitted letters 2-5 pages in length. Please refer to the College’s website to help inform the letter in regard to fit and engagement opportunities. Also note that the curriculum vitae and letter will be reviewed by an interdisciplinary panel.

Please submit the curriculum vitae and letter by Monday, January 8, 2024 via email to Abby Vogus, SIRI Specialist, at avogus@yorku.ca.

Evaluation Process

Submissions will be reviewed by the Major Awards Advisory Committee (MAAC), which will then provide advice to the Vice-President Research & Innovation (VPRI) on top tier candidates.  The VPRI will then put forward top applications to Massey College for their consideration. Typically, the College contacts applicants directly for interviews in the Spring, with Fellowship winners announced shortly thereafter.

How to Apply

York University researchers are reminded that all applications for external research funding, including Letters of Intent, must be reviewed and approved by the Office of Research Services before they are submitted to the granting agency.  For internal approval, the application must be accompanied by a completed ORS Checklist, which requires the Dean’s signature.  Please send the complete application, with the finalized budget and a completed ORS checklist to sciapps@yorku.ca, five days prior to agency deadline.

ORS is accepting electronic applications – the process is outlined here.
