September 2023

Some personnel updates – Hannah and Sergio have finished their summer research, and Hannah won ‘best talk’ at the undergraduate research conference – Congrats! Hannah is continuing with us for her honours research, while Sergio will join us again next year.

We also welcome Mary Odagwe, our former ICE student from Calgary, and Samira Komijani who are joining us for graduate studies!

June 2023

A lot of action on the people front – we welcome Hannah Le and Sergio Ambrico for the summer, as well as Cheryl Cai Hui Tan from NTU Singapore for 6 months to the group! Hannah is sponsored by an ENURA scholarship, while Cheryl is a CN Yang scholar.

And Nayanthara is having a very successful spring. She was awarded a poster prize at the 3rd From Carbon-Rich Molecules to Carbon-Based Materials Conference, and she was invited to give an Emerging Investigator talk at the CSC Conference in Vancouver – Congrats!

Another major changing of the guards. Both Matt Gradiski and Josh Gaffen moved on to better things, while Mary Odagwe returned to Calgary to finish her undergraduate studies – all the best to all three! 

Amaar Hussein leveled up to graduate studies and we welcome Farnaz Rezaei who is joining us a MSc student from Iran.

We welcome two new graduate students to the group: Tamana Alizadeh joins us from Ryerson University for her MSc, while Reza Dadgar Yeganeh already brings a MSc degree from Shahid Beheshti University in Iran for his PhD studies.

We bid farewell to Colin Bridges whose review article on Lewis acid/base-doped semiconductors was also just published in JPOC (with a cool cover page, courtesy of Tihana Mirkovic).

Road trip! Half the group will travel to Quebec City to attend the CCCE2019; Colin, Josh, and Thomas will give talks, while Nayanthara will present a poster. In addition, Amir will present a poster on his honours research at McMaster.

Big collaborative paper with the Caputo group on Lewis-acid sensing has been published in Chem

December

A nice end to the year. Two new papers have been accepted – one from a collaboration with the Weiss group at Université de Strasbourg, and one honoring Koop Lammertsma and Edgar Niecke.

The winds of change are here again. Laura has successfuly wrapped up her grad studies in Calgary – Congrats! And Carmen went back to UBC after a very successful summer – stay tuned for her exciting research results!

The merry month of May. 
Liisa has successfully wrapped up her grad studies in Calgary – Congrats! And we welcome four new additions to the team at York! Josh Gaffen and Colin Bridges are our new postdocs, while Carmen Chu and Anyi Zou are our undergraduate researchers for the summer.

And Monika Stolar was awarded a  2018 IUPAC-Solvay International Award for Young Chemists  for her PhD work in Calgary – Big Congrats!

December

Thomas W.’s paper on the deeper understanding of the phosphole-lipid systems, has been published by J. Mater. Chem. C as part of the Shape-Responsive Fluorophores issue.

Thomas B. went to Hawaii, where he co-organized a symopisum on Organomain Group Materials, and gave a talk in the Advances in Phosphorus Chemistry symposium.

November

Thomas B. has joined the editorial board of the new Wiley journal ChemistrySelect.

Christian says goodbye to Calgary – He is joining the Tykwinski group in Erlangen, Germany, to work on some collaborative projects, courtesy of a Humboldt return fellowship.

Several group members attended BSOC in Banff. Thomas W. and Racheal gave talks, while Nicole and Laura presented posters.

Thomas B. is off to Europe to give talks at ISNA16 in Madrid, IRIS14 in Regensburg, as well as a couple of departmental seminars in Budapest and Bielefeld.

Monika’s CSC talk in Ottawa was awarded with an Outstanding Presentation Award – congrats! 

Thomas B. presented one of the group’s latest projects at the Physical Organic Gordon Conference at Holderness School, NH.

Monika, Thomas W., and Thomas B. all gave talks at the CSC conference in Ottawa.

2013 keeps giving – Huy and Xiaoming’s paper on a halochromic white light-emitting dithienophosphole has been accepted by ChemComm and Monika’s perspective on charge transport and storage materials by PCCP.

The 2013 publication bonanza continues: Carlos’ Account on dithienophospholes, as well as Xiaoming’s review on conjugated main-group polymers for optoelectronics and his paper on dithiazolo-phospholes have been accepted by SYNLETT, RSC Adv., and Chem. Eur. J., respectively.

Yi struck again! His and Felix’ paper on new-gen, luminescent phosphole-lipids has been accepted by J. Phys. Chem. C and is now online.

Yi’s paper on P-linked bisphospholes has been accepted by Dalton Trans. and is now online.

Monika has received the 2013 Department CIC Travel Award that will allow her to present her latest work at the CSC conference in Quebec City – Congrats!

November

Thomas B. has received a Friederich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation and will spend the first four months of the new year in Germany at the University of Erlangen Nuremberg with Rik Tykwinski.

A complete overhaul of the group in the Fall of 2012: Jordan has successfully defended his thesis – Carita went back to Victoria – Christine went back to Germany – Thomas Wang and Monika Stolar are the new grad student additions from China and Calgary, respectively – Ryan Goodall and Hannes Puntscher are this year’s TASSEP students from Ireland and Austria, respectively – Huy Huynh and Emad Hajar are this year’s Chem502 students – Good bye and all the best to the people leaving – Welcome to the new crew!
