If you are interested in taking synthetic organic/main group/organometallic chemistry a step further, this could be the right place for you. Most of our research projects combine synthetic molecular chemistry with advanced characterization and application in polymer/materials science.

Preference is given to students with research experience in synthetic chemistry and interested in obtaining a Ph.D. degree. In addition, candidates are strongly encouraged to apply for major scholarship support (see below for details).

What to expect:
As our field of research is interdisciplinary combining organic, inorganic, physical, and polymeric objectives and techniques, team members will obtain comprehensive synthetic skills as well as an understanding for materials design. You will be able to experience the full breadth of groundbreaking materials science from the conception of an idea all the way to the realization in practical applications, and in doing so acquiring a deep understanding of the various, most different aspects of the research at each stage.
Next to the required design of the synthetic strategies, the actual synthesis and isolation of the materials, team members will also be responsible for comprehensive characterization and data analysis that involves hands-on techniques to determine the identity (NMR spectroscopy) and properties (UV/vis & fluorescence spectroscopy, electrochemistry, and/or microscopies, such as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), confocal fluorescence and polarized optical microscopy) of the new species. Most group members will also use Density-Functional Theory (DFT) calculations to support experimental findings and will ultimately be able to screen the utility of their most promising materials in practical device applications hands-on.
The success of our research program furthermore strongly relies on collaborative efforts with other groups - locally and worldwide. Therefore, being able to communicate with other chemists as well as scientists of different areas of expertise would be an asset.
