Talk Description:
We know that mathematics involves language, and symbols - but how we 'see' changes how we do our mathematics. Current research on vision confirms that what you see is different that what I see, what a teacher sees is different than what a student sees, and that we create what we see. We will give examples to show how we construct what we see, and how these differences can make a big difference in problem solving. We will use examples from a broad range of mathematics to illustrate these points, and to suggest ways in which we can do better at mathematics using our vision.
