Position Description: Work/Study

Position Title: Student Life Ambassador

Department: Student Community & Leadership Development 

Employment Category: Part-Time (Up to 15 hours per week) 

Rate of Pay: $16.55/hr

Employment Term: September 2024 – April 2025

Number of Positions: 6

Delivery of Services: In Person, Keele Campus

Job Purpose:

Student Life Ambassadors will provide services to students that will support their journey at York University.From helping find their way on campus, to connecting with important resources, the team will provide peer to peer support for other York students.

Major Areas of Responsibility:

Student Life Ambassadors will provide services to students that will support their journey at York University.

  • Provide directions and referral services during the beginning of each semester to help students navigate campus.
  • Promote support services and resources, both faculty and university based, to students year-round, particularly around peak times such as midterms and final exams.
  • Participate in Division of Student initiatives around Recruitment, Transition, and Retention (e.g., recruitment fairs, York 101 sessions, and election polling stations).
  • Support units within SCLD to improve student life initiatives throughout the year.

*Perform other related duties as required. Not to exceed 5%

Eligibility:

To be considered for the Student Life Ambassador position applicants must be Full- time Domestic or Full-time International student for FW 2022 academic year.

Qualifications:

  • Enthusiasm for helping students and demonstrates initiative in developing new programming ideas for the team
  • Knowledge of York’s campus, services, and resources
  • Ability to provide accurate information and resources in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent oral & written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Basic knowledge of Microsoft Teams and Outlook
  • Ability to work well in a team but also independently
  • Ability to understand and apply policy and procedure to daily activities as well as educate others
  • Detail-oriented and demonstrated ability to take initiative
  • Excellent oral & written communication skills
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment or material of varying weight (up to 15lbs)
  • Preference will be given to 2nd and 3rd year students
  • Knowledge & Experience with SCLD services an asset
  • Experience in student engagement initiatives (student clubs, peer mentor programs, orientation, etc.) is an asset
  • Must be available for all mandatory training

Becoming YU:

The Work Study Student program provides on-campus job opportunities for eligible York Universityundergraduate students. Work Study Student employees are provided opportunities to contribute to support roles while developing valuable, relevant skills and work experience for the workplace. These roles offer alearning and development opportunity for Work Study Student employees to receive experiential on-the-job training, guidance, and mentorship. Under the guidance of permanent staff members,

  • recognizing the value of their personal, academic and professional experiences;
  • identifying their competencies and skills; and
  • articulating their skills and experiences with confidence.

Becoming YU includes regular meetings with your student employment supervisor/coach for reflecting on yourprogress and getting valuable feedback.

Mandatory Training:

  • Peer Leadership Training + Continuous Professional Development Series
  • SCLD Joint Training/Digital Training
  • ALL Student Life Ambassador Training (throughout summer and F/W school year)
