“I believe that education and innovation are the foundational drivers of societal progress – and York University is built on these values. This University has shaped my career and my life, and I look forward to ensuring others benefit from this University for years to come.”

Douglas (Doug) Bergeron, a distinguished business leader, investor and philanthropist, brings a wealth of experience to York University’s Board of Governors. A proud York alumnus, Doug earned his Bachelor of Arts with Special Honours in Computer Science from York in 1983. His strong connection to the University, paired with his remarkable global business acumen, make him a valuable contributor to the University’s vision and mission.

Doug’s career trajectory exemplifies his expertise in transforming businesses and nurturing innovation. In 2001, he led the acquisition of VeriFone from Hewlett-Packard, eventually growing the company’s value to $5 billion under his leadership. As the former chairman and CEO of VeriFone, Doug’s success in building the company into a multinational leader in electronic payment solutions has been recognized as one of the most successful private equity investments of its time. He is also a senior advisor to the private equity firm GTCR and the founder of DGB Investments, a diversified holding company for technology ventures.

Doug’s contributions extend far beyond the corporate world. His dedication to philanthropy is evident in the transformative impact he has made at York University. In 2014, his historic gift of $10 million established the Bergeron Centre for Engineering Excellence, an innovative hub that supports the next generation of engineers and scientists. His ongoing commitment to York is also reflected in his funding of the Bergeron Entrepreneurs in Science and Technology (BEST) Program, which fosters entrepreneurial thinking and venture creation among students.

Doug has remained connected to academia throughout his career, serving as a member of the Board of Overseers at Stanford University’s Hoover Institute. His insights and leadership have also earned him a permanent membership in the Council on Foreign Relations, along with regular invitations to the World Economic Forum in Davos.

York University has long been a place of significance for Doug, not only as the institution where he began his professional journey but also as a source of inspiration for his ongoing dedication to education and innovation. By joining the Board of Governors, Doug is returning to his roots, eager to help guide York’s strategic vision for the future and ensure that today’s students have the same transformative opportunities that shaped his success.
