Uma Gopinath’s fondest memory of York University is her time spent collaborating with recent graduates, witnessing their application of York-acquired knowledge in the real world—a testament to York’s ability to nurture talent. More recently, Uma had the opportunity to engage with York students through projects with two Masters-level programs. Uma’s connection to the University is inspired by York’s dedication to fostering a diverse and inclusive learning environment, strongly resonating with her commitment to education and a desire to give back to communities. As York Governor, Uma hopes to contribute meaningfully to the academic and personal growth of students.
An accomplished technology and operations leader, Uma’s global experience delivering high impact technology solutions spans continents and companies from management at the Khaleej Oman Institute in Oman to director roles with Bell Canada, assistant vice-president technology positions with the Canadian Tire Corporation and the director, technology and innovation at Lush Fresh Handmade Cosmetics North America. America and most recently chief information officer at Metrolinx leading the Innovation and Information Technology team. Uma is currently the chief information officer leading the digital transformation at Porter Airlines.
Uma is a passionate advocate for equity, diversity and inclusion, extending her influence by engaging with non-profit organizations to grown and develop communities, mentoring new immigrants and graduates, and promoting technology in community initiatives.
In 2023, Uma received the Gil Bennett Gold Standard Award, recognizing dedication in raising the bar for professional standards in corporate governance by The Directors College, DeGroote School of Business, McMaster University. Uma was awarded the Chief Information Technology Officer of the Year award by the Women in IT Canada Awards in 2023. In addition, she was named a Large Corporate Finalist in the 2023 Toronto CIO ORBIE® Awards.
