Senate Elections

Nominations to Senate Committees and Other Senate-Elected Positions: Call for Nominations and Expressions of Interest

The Executive Committee is pleased to begin the annual process of identifying nominees for election by Senate to committees and positions. As the University’s principal academic governing body, the Senate is responsible for many important initiatives which serve the academic needs of the University. Much of its work is performed through committees comprised of a diverse selection of full-time and contract faculty members and students from across the University. Examples of functions performed include making recommendations for new academic programs, rendering decisions on student appeals, allocating teaching awards, and making recommendations with respect to tenure and promotion. Information about Senate and its committees can be accessed online from the University Secretariat.

It is not necessary to be a Senator in order to serve on most committees. Indeed, participation of non-Senators is encouraged. Committees operate most effectively with active involvement from both seasoned and newer members of the community. In recommending a slate of candidates for election to committees, the Executive Committee (or its Nominations Sub-Committee) takes into account several factors including candidates’ skills, experience and expertise, rank, and a distribution of members among Faculties. It reviews all nominations and expressions of interest and will make a formal recommendation to Senate.

A number of vacancies will be available as of July 1, 2025. Interested parties are encouraged to submit nominations and expressions of interest online by 12:00pm (noon) on (insert date).

Questions about any aspect of the election process or vacancies may be directed to Cheryl Underhill of the University Secretariat underhil@yorku.ca.
